Buttock Augmentation
What Is Buttock Augmentation (Gluteal Augmentation)?
Buttock augmentation is a body contouring procedure performed using surgical and/or fat injection-based techniques to achieve a fuller, lifted, and more aesthetic appearance of the gluteal area. It can be applied to individuals with structurally flat or small buttocks, as well as to those who experience volume loss due to weight fluctuations, aging, or post-pregnancy changes.
Achieving ideal waist-to-hip proportions, enhancing body contours toward an hourglass shape, and creating a rounder, more feminine buttock appearance are among the primary goals of buttock augmentation surgery.
What Are the Methods of Buttock Augmentation?
There are two to three commonly used methods in gluteal aesthetics. These techniques can be applied individually or combined in selected cases.
1. Buttock Augmentation with Fat Injection (Brazilian Butt Lift – BBL)
In buttock augmentation with fat injection, fat harvested from the patient’s own body is purified using specialized techniques and injected into the gluteal area. This allows slimming of areas such as the waist, abdomen, and hips while providing a fuller and lifted appearance to the buttocks. As a result, the hourglass body shape can be achieved more easily.
Fat is typically harvested via liposuction from areas with excess fat such as the abdomen, waist, hips, or inner thighs. The collected fat is processed to separate viable fat cells and is then injected between the gluteal muscles and subcutaneous tissue using micro-injection techniques.
The main advantage of this method is the use of the patient’s own tissue, resulting in an extremely natural look and feel. In addition, enhancing the waistline makes the buttock contour more striking.
2. Buttock Augmentation with Silicone Implants
Buttock augmentation with silicone implants is preferred for individuals who do not have sufficient fat tissue or who desire more pronounced and long-lasting volume. In this method, specially designed gluteal implants are placed within or beneath the gluteal muscles.
Implants may be round or anatomical (teardrop-shaped), and the size and shape are selected based on the patient’s anatomy, skin thickness, and aesthetic expectations. Implant placement is typically performed through an incision made along the natural crease between the buttocks, allowing the scar to remain as concealed as possible.
Silicone implants are long-lasting and do not lose volume. Therefore, they are a strong option for patients seeking significant buttock projection and a lifted appearance in a single procedure.
3. Supercharged BBL (BBL + Implant)
Supercharged BBL is an advanced body contouring technique in which fat injection and silicone gluteal implant placement are performed together in the same surgical session. In this method, silicone implants provide foundational projection and permanent volume, while fat harvested from the patient’s own body is used to refine the surrounding, lower, and lateral buttock areas, creating smoother and more natural transitions.
Supercharged BBL allows for both strong projection and a soft, natural contour in patients who desire significant volume increase but cannot achieve ideal results with implants or fat injection alone. With proper patient selection and accurate surgical planning, aesthetically balanced and long-lasting results can be achieved.
Which Method Is Right for You?
The most suitable buttock augmentation technique is determined during the clinical examination. The following criteria are important in method selection:
- Availability of sufficient fat tissue in the body
- Skin thickness and elasticity
- Existing buttock volume and shape
- Desired amount of augmentation and contour
- The patient’s daily lifestyle and sports activities
In lean patients with low body fat, silicone implants are often more suitable, while patients seeking both slimming and fullness may benefit from fat injection or a combination of fat injection and small-sized implants (supercharged BBL).
How Is Buttock Augmentation Surgery Performed?
Buttock augmentation procedures are performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the chosen technique, the operation duration varies but typically lasts between 1.5 and 3 hours.
Fat Injection Procedure
- The areas to undergo liposuction are marked beforehand.
- Fat is harvested from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, or inner thighs using specialized cannulas.
- The harvested fat is purified through centrifugation or filtration processes.
- The prepared fat is injected into the buttock area in layers using micro-cannulas, with careful attention to symmetry.
- After the procedure, a special compression garment is applied, and the patient is monitored for several hours.
Silicone Buttock Implant Procedure
- The shape and volume of the implant are carefully planned before surgery.
- A short incision is made along the natural crease between the buttocks, positioned to remain within the underwear line.
- A suitable pocket is created within or beneath the gluteal muscle for implant placement.
- The implants are placed symmetrically and secured within the tissue.
- The incision is closed with aesthetic sutures, and a compression garment is applied.
Recovery Process After Buttock Augmentation Surgery
Although the recovery process varies depending on the technique used, the general principles are similar. Mild pain, a feeling of tightness, and difficulty sitting are normal during the first few days.
Advantages of Buttock Augmentation
- A fuller, lifted, and more feminine buttock appearance
- An hourglass body shape achieved by enhanced waist definition
- Improved aesthetic appearance of clothing
- Increased self-confidence
- Simultaneous body slimming with fat injection
Possible Risks of Buttock Augmentation
- Bleeding and bruising
- Infection
- Prolonged swelling and edema
- Asymmetry or contour irregularities
- Partial fat resorption in fat injection procedures
- Capsule formation or implant displacement in implant-based cases
Frequently Asked Questions About Buttock Augmentation
Will buttock implants be noticeable from the outside?
When properly planned and sized, gluteal implants do not create an artificial appearance from the outside.
Are the results achieved with fat injection permanent?
In general, the surviving fat cells become permanent in the treated area.
Is there an age limit for buttock augmentation surgery?
Generally, individuals who are over 18 years of age and medically suitable may be candidates.
