Primary Rhinoplasty
What Is Primary Rhinoplasty (First Nose Surgery)?
Since each individual’s facial anatomy, genetic structure, and ethnic background are different, rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that must be planned on a personalized basis. A nose that is harmonious with the overall proportions of the face is one of the most decisive elements of aesthetic appearance. Primary rhinoplasty is the rhinoplasty procedure performed on a person for the first time and aims to improve the shape of the nose both aesthetically and functionally.
The shape of the nasal tip, nasal root height, nasal length, visibility of the nostrils, and the contours of the nasal bridge are carefully evaluated to achieve aesthetic proportions. The interventions to be performed before rhinoplasty are planned entirely on an individual basis, and with modern technologies, a simulation of the postoperative appearance can be shown to the patient.
How Is Primary Rhinoplasty Performed?
Primary rhinoplasty is the first aesthetic intervention performed on the nose. Taking facial proportions into consideration, the surgeon may reduce the dorsal hump, reshape the nasal tip, equalize the nostrils, and correct septal deviations and nasal turbinates (conchae) to eliminate breathing problems.
The most important advantage of this surgery is that, since there has been no previous intervention, the tissues retain their natural structure, there are no adhesions or weaknesses, and the surgeon has a wider range of motion.
Rhinoplasty is a surgery that is completely planned on an individual basis, and the operation lasts an average of 2–3 hours. Depending on the patient’s general health condition and the surgeon’s preference, the patient may be discharged on the same day after surgery or stay in the hospital for one night.
Recovery Process After Primary Rhinoplasty
The postoperative period is a controlled process during which nasal packs, splints, and swelling gradually subside. Nasal packs are placed to prevent bleeding and are usually removed within 2–4 days.
The splint on the nasal bridge is removed after 7 days, allowing the patient to return more comfortably to daily life. Sutures used on the nasal tip are also removed during this period. To help reduce edema more quickly, nasal taping is generally recommended for approximately 1 month.
Swelling and edema decrease significantly within the first 10 days. However, it takes between 6 months and 1 year for the nose to fully settle and for all details to become clear. Within the first 6 months, most of the swelling subsides and approximately 80% of the final appearance becomes evident.
Possible Situations During the Recovery Process
- Breathing through the nose may be difficult in the first days due to edema.
- Swelling and bruising may be more noticeable, especially during the first week.
- Sleeping in an elevated position helps reduce swelling.
- Breathing gradually becomes easier after the nasal packs are removed.
Points to Consider After Surgery
Post-rhinoplasty care directly affects the speed of recovery. During the first 48 hours, sleeping with a high pillow and in an elevated position is recommended. Spicy foods, very hot or very cold foods should be avoided, and factors that may trigger sneezing should be kept away.
Since the nasal packs should not get wet, hairdresser-style washing should be preferred when showering. After the packs are removed, the nasal sprays recommended by the doctor should be used regularly. Massage techniques provided by the physician should also be applied during the appropriate period.
Important Warnings
- Contact sports that pose a risk of trauma to the nose should be avoided for the first 3 months.
- Sun exposure should be minimized, and sunscreen with high SPF should be used.
- Glasses should not be worn for the period determined by the surgeon (usually 3 months).
- Smoking and alcohol should not be used during the recommended period, as they negatively affect healing.
Who Is Suitable for Primary Rhinoplasty?
- Individuals who will undergo nose surgery for the first time
- Those who are aesthetically dissatisfied with the shape of their nose
- Individuals with deviation or a hump on the nasal bone
- Those with drooping, asymmetry, or deformity of the nasal tip
- Individuals experiencing breathing difficulties
- Women over the age of 17 and men over the age of 18 (bone development must be complete)
Results That Can Be Achieved with Primary Rhinoplasty
- A more aesthetic nose appearance that is harmonious with the face
- A nasal tip with symmetrical and natural contours
- Strong and comfortable breathing
- A harmonious profile suitable for facial proportions
Primary rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently preferred aesthetic surgical procedures because it offers both functional and aesthetic results. Rhinoplasty performed with proper planning and by an experienced surgeon provides lifelong, permanent, and satisfying outcomes. Depending on the tissue healing process, a need for revision may rarely arise.
